At VRD, we thrive on good-natured competition, and we’ve had decades of proven experience providing opportunities to athletes of all caliber for the best races, leagues, tournaments or drop-in nights. Our trail running series, named best running series by Colorado Magazine in 2005 and 2008, attracts the region’s finest athletes and has been used as a qualifier for the U.S. Mountain Running Team more often than any other in the U.S. Our Wednesday night mountain bike series draws an average 200 racers ranging in age from eight to 60+ and frequently includes some of the best professional racers around. In spring, summer and fall, our playing fields are ideal backdrops for youth and adult leagues and sports camps. From softball to soccer, lacrosse to volleyball, Vail Recreation District strives to provide the highest quality instruction and most well-run competitions you’ll find anywhere.
Shamrock Shuffle Foot Running Race | 4 p.m. Saturday, March 16 | Information
The Vail Recreation District will host its 2nd annual Krueger Family Shamrock Shuffle 5k and 10k race, plus a kids 1k fun run, in celebration of all things green for St. Patrick's Day at the Vail Nordic Center. The race, which will include a snowshoe category and running shoe (Yak Trax) category, will take place at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 16 and will be followed by a post-race gathering that will include free beer provided by Crazy Mountain Brewery for participants at Happy Valley Grill in the Vail Nordic Center. Snow shoe rentals will be available while supplies last.
The Vail Recreation District's (VRD) Sports Spectacular will return Thursday afternoons.. The Spectacular will provide an opportunity for children in grades first through third to participate in a variety of sports over a five week period including gymnastics, Nordic skiing, ice skating, tennis, and basketball. It gives your children a great introduction to these sports.

It's T-Ball Time again! Introduce your kids to America's national pastime through our five week t-ball program. For 5 and 6 year olds, t-ball gets kids used to the rules of the game, hitting, throwing, fielding, & running the bases ... followed up with a game to finish each Monday night session. Be sure to sign up soon, only 20 spots total!

The VRD organizes leagues year-round for a variety of sports including basketball, soccer, volleyball, flag football, 8v8 soccer, softball and ice hockey.
Summer/Fall Leagues: 2013 Schedule
The 2013 softball season is back again, starting May 28th and running through mid-August! Registration opens at 8am on Wednesday, April 17th at the Ford Park Tennis Center. Come early & hungry - registration is limited, and there will be donuts & coffee for all you early risers!
Games will be held nightly, Monday - Thursday starting at 5:45pm & 7:00pm. And with three leagues to play in (Men's Open, Men's Business, & Coed), there's plenty of options to hit the diamond this summer. For more information, check out our 2013 Summer Softball flyer.

La Sportiva Vail Mountain Trail Running Race Series | Registration | 2013 Info | Photos
Named Colorado's "Best Race Series" by Colorado Runner Magazine in 2005 and 2008, the La Sportiva Vail Mountain Trail Running Race Series has become an iconic event, challenging runners on trails and over mountain roads, through tranquil fields and forests, over streams and past awe-inspiring vistas for the past 13 years. The 2011 La Sportiva Mountain Trail Running Race Series offered racers approximately 52 miles of scenic racing, for a total elevation gain of 16,475 feet and more breathtaking views than we can count. Races take place May through early September.

Youth Summer Sports Camps | Ages 4 and Older | Registration | Information
There's nothing more fun for kids than spending long summer days playing their favorite sports with friends - and spots fill quickly for the VRD's youth summer sports camps. Camps provide children ages four and older with opportunities to develop new skills and refine existing talent in baseball, basketball, sports training, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball and more. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Spring MTB Short Track Series | Information
Back for a third year, the VRD will host a spring mountain bike short track series in 2013. No points or prizes…just a fun way to get in shape after a long winter and a great way to launch newcomers into the sport of mountain bike racing. Races will take place on a short, dirt loop and racers have 20 minutes to ride as many laps as possible. Kids' races will be 5 and 10 minutes in length. There will be parties after each race where we’ll celebrate with a raffle and free beer for adult participants.

The Ford Park and Vail Athletic Fields host some of the best sports competitions in the U.S. Home to the Vail Lacrosse Shootout, one of the country's largest lacrosse tournaments, the annual Kick-It! 3v3 Rocky Mountain Regional Finals Soccer tournament, the annual King of the Mountain Volleyball tournament, or the Vail Soccer Invitational, Vail is a crowdpleasing location for tournaments, championships and festivals during the spring, summer and fall. Join the VRD for its free, weekly, summer running club taking place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays at the Vail Chophouse in LionsHead. The club is led by local runner Greg Decent and variety of other athletes and takes participants running on and around Vail's scenic recreation paths.
