2023 Year in Review - Sports

Participation in our after school youth sports programs and summer sports camps was up from 2022. We added a new event, the Home Run Derby, and continued to time more non-VRD events. The Sports Department added another full-time, year-round position in 2023, which was very much needed considering how much the department has grown.

Among other events, we partnered with Beaver Creek Resort Company to time their 2023 Snowshoe Series.

In other big news, our Sports Director, Joel Rabinowitz helped coach the Battle Mountain Huskies soccer team all the way to the 2023 4A State Championship! Congratulations Huskies!

We had 150 participants in the 2023 Ugly Sweater Run, up from 136 in 2022. 92% of participants were from Eagle County; 8% from other parts of the state. This event raised $900 for the Community Market, plus we collected over 600 lbs. of food. We also bought $900 worth of toys in addition to a healthy amount of toy donations!

The VRD partnered with the Vail Valley Mountain Trails Alliance for two trail workdays in the summer and fall of 2023. Our adopted trail is the North Trail, and staff volunteers worked to clear debris and overgrown brush, fix drainages and complete other tasks as directed by the VVMTA staff.
