The Vail Recreation District is continuing the mini-competition in the 2025 Bloch & Chapleau Mountain Bike Town Series after its successful return last year. Race Rules

2025 Mountain Bike Series Rules

The mountain bike series is not USA Cycling-sanctioned; however, USA Cycling rules will apply except when in conflict of the following:

  • The VRD’s mountain bike series is meant to be fun and safe for all racers. Although these are competitive events, safety comes first! NO POOR SPORTSMANSHIP OR UNSAFE RIDING WILL BE TOLERATED. VRD reserves the right to disqualify riders on these grounds.
  • We are a community and we help each other. Therefore, any rider that does not finish their race because they stopped to help an injured rider will receive 25 GSP (Good Samaritan Points) toward their individual and team points total for that race.
  • Helmets are required to participate in all mountain bike series races.
  • E-bikes of any type are NOT permitted in VRD races.
  • Riders can register for the entire series or for individual races. Only riders who register for the entire series will receive individual and team series points. Registering for seven individual races does not register a racer for the entire series.
  • Riders accrue points at each race they participate in based on their finish place and the number of racers in their category. (See FAQs for point breakdowns). Overall series standings are based each individual’s best five of seven races.
  • Riders may choose to change categories at any time; however, we encourage riders to move up to a more competitive category after TWO first place finishes.
  • If you permanently change categories, you will start accruing points in your new category. Half of the points from your original category will transfer to the new category. If you switch categories for only one race; you will receive half the points for the single race. You can only be in one category for the overall title.
  • Racers must complete the entire race on the same bicycle on which the race was begun. Riders may accept help from other racers on course for repairs; however, cannibalizing other bikes is not permitted.
  • It is the responsibility of the passing rider to overtake safely. Riders being passed must move over as quickly and safely as possible. Lapped riders must yield to overtaking riders from the same category. If two riders in the same category are vying for position, the leading rider does not have to yield to the challenging rider.
  • A rider may not bodily interfere with the intent to impede another rider’s progress.
  • It is the responsibility of the racer to stay on course and keep track of their laps.
  • Headphones and other personal listening devices are allowed but must not interfere with a racer's awareness of other racers and their surroundings on the race course.
  • Short-cutting and/or cutting switchbacks is not permitted and will result in disqualification.
  • If you do not finish (DNF) a race for any reason, or have already finished the race, do not go through the finish chute. If you cross the finish line in error, notify the race staff in the timing trailer immediately.
  • Racers have 48 hours after a race to protest the results.
  • Riding and racing on world class trails is a privilege, not a right. Our trails do not build and maintain themselves. Therefore, series riders can earn an extra 25 points towards their overall series total if they participate in one trail work event prior to August 27. Details can be found on in the 'Trail Work' section below.
  • We will not give temporary number plates for a forgotten plate. Replacement series plates cost $20.
Team Rules & Points Breakdown

2025 Team Rules

  • Each team must have a captain who serves as the spokesperson with race management. This person will assume the role as the sole communicator for the team with the VRD.
  • We will track team points for both the Bloch & Chapleau Town MTB Series and the Youth Series. Adult riders cannot earn points in the youth series and vice versa. See categories below.
  • Teams will have a roster with a maximum of 25 riders. There is no minimum number of riders on a team.
  • Team rosters can be changed and riders can be added up to the 25-person limit until the fourth race. After the 4th race, your roster will be frozen. All changes must be made via email or an official change form.
  • All team riders must be registered as a series rider and can only be on one team roster. Individual race riders cannot accrue points for a team.
  • Only 15 riders will score points at each race. Team captains do not need to submit a race day roster. The top 15 point scorers from the team at each race will automatically receive points for their team.
  • In the event of a tie for overall team series points, the team with the most first place finishes for all seven races wins.
  • Each person on the team must register online or fill out a race entry form and full payment for each person must accompany the entries. Team Rosters and Entry Forms must be received by May 23, 2025. After that date, a $75 team late fee will be added to the team fee.
  • All teams who submit a complete team roster, payment and all registrations in an organized manner before May 23 will receive 15 bonus points towards their overall team points.
  • New teams can enter at any time during the season. All late fees will apply to time of entry.
  • NO POOR SPORTSMANSHIP OR UNSAFE RIDING WILL BE TOLERATED. VRD reserves the right to disqualify riders on these grounds.

Weather and Refund Policy

Vail Recreation District Mountain Bike Series Weather and Refund Policy

Below are the guidelines for how VRD will conduct races in the event of challenging weather. Our primary considerations are the safety of racers, race support staff, race visitors and potential damage to the race venue (trails and infield).

Any decisions regarding cancelling, postponing or altering race start times, lap length, number of laps, etc. will be made jointly by the VRD Sport’s team and the land manager. Often this decision cannot be made until the day of the race due to the unpredictable and emergent nature of wet or stormy weather. That said, we will do our best to make the call to change venue or reschedule with as much notice as possible.

VRD will make every attempt to notify the racing population via emails, Facebook, and website updates as soon as possible.

VRD Weather Guidelines:

  • Races are held on their scheduled dates and times unless the racecourse or weather on the day of the race is deemed un-rideable and/or dangerous.
  • The presence of forest fires and poor air quality in and around the race location may cause the postponement or cancellation of an event. In deciding whether to cancel or postpone an event due to smoke from forest fires VRD shall consider the Eagle County Air Quality Guidelines as part of its decision-making process.
  • VRD will have the option to delay the start of the race from the published times if the weather has created dangerous conditions. VRD may also reschedule the race for a later date or move the race to a different venue.
  • Courses and or lap lengths may be altered or shortened because of weather conditions.
  • All racing will stop immediately in the presence of lightning within 8 miles. Course marshals will direct racers off course where they can seek shelter in vehicles or buildings.
  • Restarting a race that has been stopped (and course cleared) due to lightning or other emergency: Depending on schedule and number of laps completed, the race may be declared over. If time permits, racers will be directed to re-stage at the start line and an abbreviated race will be conducted or race may be rescheduled or cancelled.

Race Fees:

  • If a race venue is moved or a race is re-scheduled race fees will automatically be applied to the moved or re-scheduled race.
  • If a race is cancelled and cannot be rescheduled due to weather conditions fees will not be refunded.

Race points:

  • If a race is cancelled (not able to be moved or rescheduled):
    • No team points will be awarded, and the race will not be included in the season overall team point standings.
    • No individual points will be awarded, and race will not be included in the season overall individual point standings. Riders will still have a “drop race” available from the remaining races.
  • If a race is partially completed (some categories complete their race and others do not):
    • No team points will be awarded, and the race will not be included in the season overall team point standings.
    • Individual points will only be awarded and counted in the categories that completed their race.
Post Race Info

Each race includes an after-party at a local restaurant, where participants can come together to celebrate or commiserate, depending on how hard the race was! Complete results will be posted at this time, and a 15-minute protest period will commence in the event there are any issues that need to be addressed. All racers ages 21 and over will get a free beer from New Belgium Brewing Company. Awards will be given to the top finishers in each (adult) category, and everyone present will be entered in a raffle drawing with great prizes from our sponsors.

Race results will also be posted online by noon the day after the race. Questions about results or additional protests should be sent to kpletcher@vailrec.com within 24 hours of the race.

Youth Series race results will be posted on-site at each race near the finish line. Immediately following the youth races, the top three finishers in each of the youth categories will be recognized, and all present youth racers will be entered in a raffle drawing at that time.

The Vail Rec District is a proud supporter of the Eagle County trails and the organizations that work hard to maintain them. It is important to remember that riding and racing on world class trails is a privilege and our trails do not build or maintain themselves. This year during the 2025 Bloch & Chapleau Mountain Bike Series, riders can earn an additional 25 points towards their overall series total if they participate in one trail work event prior to August 29. In order to be considered, participants must snap a photo of themselves during the event and tag the Vail Recreation District Facebook page as well as either the VVMBA or the HTC Facebook page (depending on the host). For more information, please contact Beth Pappas or call the VRD Sports Department at 970-479-2280. Upcoming events hosted by the VVMBA and the HTC are listed below.
